Researchers, industry leaders and innovation experts came together at What’s Next MateriNex 2026 on 21 May to explore how stronger partnerships can accelerate the development of next-generation sustainable materials and circular solutions.
Throughout the day, moderator David Rose (IMPACTComms), guided participants through a diverse programme of keynote presentations, project showcases and reflections on the future of materials innovation.
The event highlighted the critical role of deep science, ecosystem collaboration and technology-driven innovation in strengthening Europe’s competitiveness. Keynote speakers Professor Koenraad Debackere (KU Leuven), Remco Lenstra (RE-FRAMED/AMS) and Jolyce Demely (Agoria Flanders) shared their perspectives on how research, industry and policymakers can work together to transform promising ideas into real-world impact.
Participants also discovered two innovative MateriNex-supported projects. CRYOSTAT demonstrated how low-value battery waste can be transformed into high-value materials through advanced recycling technologies, while CUALITY showcased how AI and collaboration can unlock value from complex metal streams.
The day concluded with reflections on the future of the MateriNex community and a networking reception, creating new opportunities for collaboration across the materials ecosystem.
