For materials research, the following Flemish priorities, which have been put forward, are of particular importance:
- The Green Transition - Protecting the environment and delivering net zero by 2050: With a focus on the pursuit of a fully circular economy (with the ambition of meeting our needs for raw materials and water without exceeding planetary boundaries); resource governance (both European and international) with the absolute priority goal of sustainable resource management; and consideration of the full life cycle of materials and goods.
- The EU as a global innovation leader: With a focus on addressing missing links in industry and innovation; more commitment to scale-up strategy; stronger commitment to research and innovation in battery technologies.
- Open trade with the rest of the world and reduction of strategic dependencies: Focusing on smart innovation to minimize the need for critical raw materials while completing material cycles to maximize our own needs.
